The Investors’ View of Turkey

On paper, Turkey has a demographic profile that should make it a fertile ground for startups, but the country has yet to deliver a breakthrough company, entrepreneurs were told here at the Startup Turkey conference.
With very high credit-card penetration, a young and connected workforce and an economy that, while starting to slow, still is a growth economy, the country is one of the most attractive for foreign direct investment, the conference heard.

But problems remain. Lack of investment, lack of skill at building scalable companies and, inevitably, the question of clones and their role in the ecosystem were all cited as continuing challenges.

But, as Intel Capital’s Baris Aksoy pointed out, the fact that investors had flown in from London, Silicon Valley and across Europe to discuss the state of Turkey’s ecosystem is an indication of how seriously the country is taken.
