1. European Market Outlook – Rapidly growing E-Invoicing adoption rates
Market development in 2012 was again dynamic. Overall, European market growth for electronic processes is strong and sustainable. Organizations in the public and private sector are more than ever under pressure to reduce costs and to improve their Cash Management. Combined with the rich solution offering, these benefits are sure to result in further strong market growth for electronic invoicing and related topics. With an estimated volume growth of 26% for 2013, E-Invoicing is currently one of very few growing markets.
The processed B2B volume is expected to reach this year around 3,350 million E-Invoices (corresponding to 20% of all European B2B/B2G/G2B invoices). B2C volume is estimated to reach 2,100 million (13% penetration).
A milestone for fighting late payments might have a positive impact on E-Invoicing:
The EU Directive 2011/7/EU will have to be transposed into national law of member states by 16 March 2013 at the latest. Public authorities will have to pay for the goods and services that they procure within 30 days or, in very exceptional circumstances, within 60 days. Enterprises will have to pay their invoices within 60 days, unless they expressly agree otherwise and if it is not grossly unfair. Enterprises will automatically be entitled to claim interest (at least 8 percentage points above the European Central Bank’s reference) for late payment and will also be able to obtain a minimum fixed amount of 40 Euro as a compensation for recovery costs. They can claim compensation for all remaining reasonable recovery costs.
In many cases, late payments are the result of an inefficient invoice approval process. E-Invoicing can significantly help to accelerate this process.

Solution provider landscape:
At least 23 operators of E-Invoicing networks are expected to each process more than 20 million E-Invoices/E-Bills this year. For the vast majority of today’s 550 operators, the annual E-Invoicing volume still lies below 2 million. The profitability of each operator differs greatly, which is why I expect the first phase of a market consolidation to proceed. For this year, I anticipate about 15 merger & acquisition deals. In addition, I expect 30 operators to turn down their services (23 in 2012). Up to 60 new operators are expected to enter the market in Europe this year.

2. Prediction for other regions
Northern America is expected to take a significant step forward, although the objectives and types of solutions are likely to be quite different to those in Europe. The number of E-Invoicing network operators can be expected to increase sharply (from the relatively low number today). It can be seen that direct exchange of electronic messages among trading parties is the dominating trend. Alternatively, Saas is also increasingly accepted.
Brazil and Mexico have contributed the highest growth rates in the last few years. With 90% penetration, the Brazilian market is meanwhile saturated. The highest volume increase for 2013 is expected for some countries in Latin America, Europe, Turkey and Northern America. Other regions are evolving more slowly.
