After his star turn as the computer-generated character of
Gollum in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, actor Andy Serkis returns
to the role in Peter Jackson’s upcoming adaptation of The Hobbit. But
as the actor told Wired, motion-capture technology has come a long way since the
first Lord of the Rings film in 2001, bridging some of the “disconnect”
he felt while filming on separate live-action and motion-capture stages for the
original trilogy.
Serkis, who
also worked as the second unit director on The Hobbit and recently
co-founded a digital-effect house, called The
Imaginarium, specializing in motion capture, explained how the technology
had changed his acting experience and the “strange” experience of returning to
his iconic role.
The Hobbit opens in theaters on Dec. 14.
